When did you last meet a beautiful young girl who for the love of a culture, language and a man, left her own language, culture and identity behind to start a new life in a new land, making it her home and enrich it with her hard work.Yes Iam talking about Anitha Kuppusamy.Hailing from UttarPradesh, she was intrigued by the language and culture of Tamilnadu and its almost forgotten folk songs. She fell in love with the richness, simplicity and magic of the severely neglected Tamil folk songs. Infact so strong was her obsession, she went on to learn and sing them, painfully mastering the slangs and accent. She married Pushavanam Kuppusamy, a fellow singer who came from a poor, rural background. Despite the differences in their background, they rocked as a couple, and brought folk songs back to the media and made it their career , that too a very successful one. They got popular, rich and successful, had kids, built a happy home, were interviewed by Tv channels on Valentine's day and .. lived happily ever after.
I wish I could say that.
Few months back, they were in the media for the wrong reasons. Gossip columns were abuzz with the news of their strained relationship, while they continued to put on their happy faces and anchored programmes in public and in the media. Then a weekly magazine published an interview of her inlaws who bashed their DIL with the so very familiar complaints. She retorted back with her interview, talking with tears about the days spent with her now estranged husband and what she has suffered at the hands of her inlaws. She has told the magazine that she is still repaying the loan that they got for their SIL's marriage. Some of her allegations are quite strong- that she was once slapped with slippers by her inlaws during her early days and that her FIL tried to molest her when her family members had gone away to Velankanni. Towards the end of her interview she had also expressed her desire and determination to unite with her husband and reclaim her life.
Personally I admire this woman for her hard work and attitude. She was a breath of fresh air when she came to anchor TV programmes. She talks better Tamil than most other anchors (Dont even get me started on this). The kids' programme 'Malarum mottum' became one of my favourites. She insisted that the kids try and talk in Tamil, adjusted their position so their faces are exposed well to light and generally gave the programme a fresh look( yes it shows when someone tries to put in their best efforts) . Iam tempted to say that much of the success of her husband can be attributed to her presence, talent and enthusiasm.
It was disturbing to watch her in tears. I dont judge but I cant understand why she wants to get back to her husband (who did not stand by her when she complained of her FIL trying to molest her?) Ofcourse the picture is not clear as what we get to see and hear are bits and pieces from media. Cant jump in to coclusions but sometimes I feel I could take such men by collar, shake them up and ask them if they really deserved the kind of women that they have got in their lives.
